Miller takes on Wilson and Washington (AUDIO)

July 28, 2010

In a Tuesday press conference, Democrat Rob Miller laid out his battle plans for taking on Joe Wilson–and the rest of Washington. He calls it “Restoring Faith in Government.”

Miller’s platform encompasses seven key areas of reform, including “slashing congressional pay.” With a 10 percent pay cut for members of Congress, Miller says he will refuse personal pay increases and donate any new increases back to the U.S. Treasury to erase the budget deficit.

He wants to apply a 3 to 5 percent across-the-board cut in discretionary spending, except toward the Departments of Defense, Homeland Security, and Veterans Affairs.

Miller also plans to ban earmarks given to for-profit companies so that Congress cannot direct taxpayer dollars to campaign contributors. In the interest of “transparency and accountability,” he also wants to legislate uniform, searchable databases that list all earmark requests and earmarks included in funding bills.

Lobbyists must also submit quarterly reports detailing every contact made with members of Congress, staffers, or a committee; which client they were representing; and what issues they discussed.

In addition, Miller is proposing extending the “cooling off” period to five years after a member leaves office before he or she can lobby.

Congressional perks must also be reformed, according to Miller, including billing taxpayers for vehicles and cell phones, and franked mail privileges.

Finally, Miller calls for the reform of congressional per diems, banning members of Congress from keeping the funds or using them on gifts. These per diem payments, says Miller, should be tracked and filed on a searchable database.

With these seven areas of reform holding up his platform, Miller says his number one priority for South Carolina is job creation. While he rarely holds press conferences, the 2nd District candidate says his focus has been on meeting the people of his district.

Together, Miller and Wilson are raising more money than any other race, with campaign contributions totaling $6.6 million.
