Capital One® Spark℠ Miles Business Credit Card Review

With two sign-up bonus opportunities and two miles earned for every dollar spent, rewards will add up quickly with the Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card. Some benefits are missing, but overall the card is well-balanced and would be a good choice for many businesses.

Latest Update November 5, 2015

The Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card rewards cardholders with two miles for every dollar spent. Some business rewards credit cards offer bonus rewards on certain purchases, like office supplies or dining, but very few offer multiple rewards on every dollar spent. If you prefer a card with straightforward earning options, the Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card may be the right choice.

The Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card provides two different ways for new cardholders to earn sign-up bonuses. If you spend $1,000 in the first three months of card ownership, you will receive 10,000 bonus miles. Bonuses like these are fairly common; however, the Spark℠ Miles card offers an additional 5,000 miles when you add your first employee to the account. With these two bonuses, you’ll be well on your way to earning big rewards.

Although many business rewards cards allow you to redeem points/miles on different airlines, there are some that limit redemption to certain airlines. With the Spark℠ Card, you’ll have the freedom of using the airline of your choice with no blackout dates and no seat restrictions.

One benefit of the Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card is the lack of a foreign currency transaction fee. Many of the top business credit cards will charge as much as 3% per transaction on all foreign purchases. For those that travel internationally often, these fees can add up. In addition, the Spark℠ Miles card does not charge transfer fees or over-limit fees, two fees that are fairly common in other business rewards credit cards.

Missing some benefits and insurance coverage options

The Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card provides access to some great benefits like $0 fraud liability, 90-day purchase protection, car rental coverage, and travel and emergency assistance. However, there are some missing insurance coverage options like roadside assistance and lost luggage insurance that some potential cardholders may value, while those that regularly entertain clients or employees may be disappointed by the lack of access to exclusive events.

The Capital One® Spark℠ Miles card charges an annual membership fee of $59 dollars. The fee is waived for the first year, giving you plenty of time to determine if this is the right card for your circumstances. Relative to the annual fees of other top business rewards credit cards, the $59 is on the low end. Regular card usage should cover the annual fee, but for those who aim to keep costs at an absolute minimum, it may be worth considering an alternative business card.

Discover It Miles vs. Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card

Owning a great reward card can bring tons of benefits to you. An excellent rewards card helps you to gain extra money in the form of miles, points, or as cash back. If you are new to the world of reward points, then it might be a little bit hard for you to decide which rewards card is the best option for you. However, a little knowledge on these rewards cards will help you to easily decide which one is the accurate choice for you. Below are some important details on two of the most popular types of rewards cards in the US. Learn the difference between these two before setting for one.

Discover It Miles credit card offers unlimited 1.5x rewards to customers on their every purchase and on every day. You will be able to earn 1.5x miles by spending just $1. The rewards earned by the new card members will be matched at the end of the first year. Besides, you do not have to worry about the annual fee for Discover It Miles credit card either.

There will be no minimums or purchase caps, no limit, and no signing for the new card members. You will be also able to redeem your rewards for travel credit or for cash . This reward card offers $1 for every 100 miles that you have earned. Furthermore, you will also receive free FICO Credit Score on monthly statements, online and on mobile.

If you are able to spend an amount of $3000 on purchases in the first three months of approval, then Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card allows you to enjoy a one-time bonus of 40,000 miles. This is equal to $400 in travel. In addition to that, this credit card also let you earn 2x miles per each dollar on every day and for every purchase.

Owning this credit card will also give you the opportunity to stay at any hotel of your choice and to fly on any airline you wish. You will be also able to travel whenever you want with no blackout dates. Another advantage of settling for this credit card is that there is no limit on how much you can earn and the miles never expire.

When it comes to unnecessarily complicated deals, this one’s a winner! The Capital One Venture Rewards credit card is offering their standard 10,000 mile sign-up bonus after spending $1,000 within three months, plus they’re willing to match your mileage balance in any given airline mileage account, up to 100,000 miles. Now there are several interpretations of this, as the verbiage suggests that only miles earned through credit card spend would qualify (in other words, you would need to prove 100,000 miles earned through credit card spend), though the practical interpretation seems to be that mileage in an airline account qualifies.

The other asterisk here is that the offer is good through May 13 or until they have given away a billion miles through the match program. A lot of people are worried about that, given that you won’t know until after you’ve applied and you’re approved whether you qualify, though I have a hard time imagining that over 10,000 applications will be approved that quickly, and that each of those people has 100,000 miles in one of their accounts to show for the offer.

As far as the actual redemption opportunities for the card goes, these aren’t traditional miles we’re talking about. Instead, each of these “miles” is good towards the purchase of travel at a rate of one cent per mile. In other words, the sign-up bonus here is up to $1,100 in “credit” towards travel purchases, including airline tickets, hotels, etc., all of which are eligible for mileage/points accrual.
