Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card snapshot
Flying can be pricey but you can trim down the cost by packing a rewards credit card on every trip. The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card makes for an excellent travel companion if you prefer Southwest to other airlines.
This card comes with the kind of perks that are sure to appeal to frequent flyers, including free checked bags and no foreign transaction fees. The ability to earn points towards free flights on every purchase, along with a generous new cardmember offer are even more reasons to consider adding the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card to your travel roster.
Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card highlights
Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card basics
There’s a lot to like about the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card, starting with the ample points bonus that qualifying new cardmembers receive. Qualifying members have a chance to earn 40,000 bonus points after they make $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That’s in addition to the 2 points per $1 earned on Southwest Airlines® purchases and participating Hotel and Car Rental partners, and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases.
Any time you fly Southwest Airlines®, your first and second checked bags fly free. You won’t pay a change fee if you need to adjust or cancel your plans for any reason, and you won’t face any blackout dates so you can redeem your points for awards travel at any time. This card has no foreign transaction fees so we think it’s a great option for international travelers, and it comes with extras like Lost Luggage Reimbursement, Baggage Delay Insurance and Purchase Protection for the things you buy.
You’ll pay an annual fee for this card ($99), but in return, you will receive 6,000 bonus points after your cardmember anniversary each year. Those points may offset the fee (assuming you use them).
How does the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card compare to other travel cards?
Before locking in on a travel rewards card, it’s a good idea to see what else is out there. We’ve got the scoop on how the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card fares against top travel competitors.
Card features we want to mention:
- 30,000 bonus points after you spend $1,000 in purchases within the first 90 days
- Earn 6 points per $1 on JetBlue purchases, 2 points per $1 at restaurants and grocery stores and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases
- Points awarded in your TrueBlue account don’t expire
- Earn 5,000 bonus points every year after your account anniversary
- 50% savings on eligible inflight purchases like cocktails and food & the primary cardmember’s first checked bag is free on JetBlue-operated flights
- $99 annual fee
- No foreign transaction fee
The JetBlue Plus Card, from Barclaycard, features an attractive rewards structure for flyers who are loyal to JetBlue over other airlines.
With this card, you can earn a whopping 6 points per $1 on JetBlue purchases, not to mention 2 points per $1 at restaurants and grocery stores and 1 point per $1 on all other purchase. Qualifying new cardmembers may also have a shot at earning 30,000 bonus points after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days.
JetBlue Plus Card points can be redeemed for travel on JetBlue at any time, with no blackout dates. Points don’t expire and you can get another 5,000 bonus points after your card anniversary each year as long as your account is open and in good standing.
Like the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card, the JetBlue Plus card also comes with a $99 annual fee (but you do get 5,000 points each year after your card anniversary). There are no foreign transaction fees so you can use the card anywhere you fly without paying a foreign transaction fee on your purchases. If you use your JetBlue Plus Card to purchase a JetBlue Vacations package of a $100 or more, you may receive a $100 statement credit. Finally, you can take advantage of a 50% savings on eligible in-flight purchases.
Card features we want to mention:
- Earn 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days — that’s enough to redeem for a $500 travel statement credit
- Earn 2X miles on every purchase
- Get 5% miles back to use toward your next redemption, every time you redeem
- Annual fee of $89 – waived first year
Qualifying new cardmembers can get 50,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. The same double miles rewards rate applies but instead of being limited to just restaurants and travel, you’ll get twice the miles on all of your purchases.
This card also offers you back 5% of your miles as a bonus to use toward your next redemption when you redeem them for travel statement credit. One of the most significant differences between the two, however, is the annual feel. You’ll enjoy a $0 introductory annual fee for the first year but after that, it climbs to $89, which is just a few bucks cheaper than what you’ll pay with the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card. Unlike the Southwest Airlines® card, this card does not award miles or points on your card anniversary.
Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card rewards
You’ve got a few different ways to earn Rapid Rewards points with the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card. First, you can get 2 points per $1 on Southwest Airlines ® and participating hotel and car rental partners. That means you may get rewarded whether you’re flying, driving or curling up in your hotel room for the night.
You can also earn 1 point per $1 on every dollar in net purchases spent elsewhere. That’s great if you plan to use the card for travel and everyday spending. Earning is unlimited and there is no deadline for using your points.
Points can be redeemed for domestic and international flights on Southwest Airlines®. Southwest Airlines® flies all over the U.S., plus to Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Central America and Mexico. You can also redeem your points at more than 70,000 hotels, use them for a car rental, redeem for gift cards to selected merchants or apply them towards experiences like cruises, golf trips, wine tastings or a day at the spa.
Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card pros
The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card has quite a few things going for it, beyond its rewards structure. There’s the annual anniversary bonus, for example, which may give you 6,000 bonus points after your cardmember anniversary just for being a member. Those extra points can put you on the path towards travel faster and help to offset the $99 annual fee.
We also like this card because booking awards travel is a breeze. There are no blackout dates. You can use your points for a flight any time a seat is available. That flexibility in booking is something that you don’t always find with other airline co-branded travel rewards cards. Southwest is rare in that it does not charge a change or cancellation fee when you need to adjust your plans.
We’d certainly recommend this card if you’re a member of the Southwest Airlines® Rapid Rewards® frequent flyer program and you want a way to earn companion passes faster. Generally, to earn a companion pass you have to fly 100 times with Southwest or earn 110,000 qualifying points in a calendar year. If you use your card to book a flight, you can earn points for the purchase and frequent flyer points, which would get you closer to your goal in less time. A companion pass allows the person of your choosing to travel with you for free until December 31 of the year after you get the pass. So if you were to qualify for a companion pass in February, you’d have it for almost two years. Companion pass does not include taxes and fees.
If you earn 70,000 points in a single calendar year, you’ll qualify for A-List Preferred status in the program. At that level, you’ll get a 100% points earning bonus on each flight, priority boarding, priority check-in, free in-flight WiFi and priority standby boarding if you need a last-minute flight.
Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card cons
As far as drawbacks go, the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card does have a few issues that might be a turn-off for certain travelers.
For instance, there’s no introductory period for the annual fee; the $99 fee is applied to your first billing statement.
It also does not offer a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers or purchases, so it may not be a good choice for someone looking to save on interest charges by transferring a balance from another card (Chase may periodically offer a zero percent balance transfer opportunity to existing cardholders).
While this card does have some travel benefits, it doesn’t have the same bells and whistles as other cards. For instance, you won’t get free lounge access or complimentary concierge service. If those kinds of things are important to you, you may want to consider a different card. Indeed, many of Southwest’s perks (free 1st & 2nd checked bags, $0 change fees) are available to all of its customers, not just holders of the co-branded card.
Should you get the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier Credit Card?
If you want a way to earn rewards for flights that isn’t overly complicated, the Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards® Premier credit card delivers. The $99 annual fee might scare some folks off, but if you love flying Southwest Airlines® and you are able to use the card anniversary bonus points, you should be able to get that value back in travel.
