Seek professional help
Failing to file and pay taxes is a federal offense, punishable by a hefty fine and even time in prison. If you have skipped filing in the past, or owe money on taxes from previous years, you will want to get up-to-date as soon as possible. Any tax refunds will be lost if the return is not filed within 3 years of the return
If you can’t afford to pay your taxes, you may be able to qualify for an installment plan with the Internal Revenue Service. An installment plan allows you to pay your taxes over time while avoiding garnishments, levies or other collection actions. You'll still owe penalties and interest for paying your taxes late, but it can help make the payments more affordable. The IRS releases your lien within 30 days after you have paid your tax debt. When conditions are in the best interest of both the government and the taxpayer, other options for reducing the impact of a lien exist.
